IT’S A BIG WORLD OUT THERE

As of late, I’ve been thinking a lot about the world- it’s past, it’s present, it’s future- and how humans and other life forms fit into that future. One doesn’t have to be psychic to predict the future. It’s really just a matter of observing reality and hedging your bets based on probability. The probable future of this planet is dismal, at least if you’re a being that likes things such as: lots of breathable air, clean water, fresh natural food, and security. That last one is the kicker. Believe it or not, it’s the one that will lead to chaos the fastest. If you’ve read my other posts and or my books, you know that our sense of security is the hard-wired, necessary part of our humanity. Without it, we panic. We aren’t sure how bad the air is we breathe. Look at how many cities even today have horribly polluted air, yet millions walk around each and every day. People don’t know about how much fresh clean water there is either. Many people have it now, and aren’t concerned. Others don’t but still don’t make a fuss. Most of us in ‘civilized’ societies today don’t mind not having fresh natural food at all. In fact, we prefer processed crap. If it tastes good and is convenient, we’ll take it.

I live in California. It’s been a powder keg, and will continue to be for a long time unless a lot of money and effort is spent preventing and stopping fires. There will continue to be more people, more droughts, more heat, more encroachment on the wild etc. ‘Okay, but that’s California, it doesn’t prove anything.’ True, but unfortunately it’s not just California. It’s easy to forget, since it’s so huge compared to us and even our living area, but the world is affected like everything else. It can’t just absorb massive amount of chemicals released from burning for decades and decades and not change because of it. The world is changing because of human carelessness and an insatiable need for security. If the humans who did and do the significant damage were the only ones harmed by this, there would be a little justice to it, but the world doesn’t work like that either. The humans who have suffered and will suffer the most from a changing planet are the poorest and youngest: children born into poverty on a sick planet, at no fault of their own, will die on a pretty large scale due to social and climate imbalance. That is sickening. Of course, many innocent people already die because of social inequality and a general lack of giving a shit by those with the power to help. But, dying from the effects the planet has to take because the humans before you let it go to shit, just sucks even a little more somehow.

This post wasn’t about just climate change when I started it, but I did write it because it means something to look beyond our lives and consider the future- not our future- but the future of our children, other children, and their children as well. My daughter is five years old. I’m 43. When she is my age, it will be 2058. I’m not an expert on how the world is changing and how it will change by any means. However, all signs point to it being really shitty unless we take drastic measures to slow it down. If I had the power, I’d take these measures in a heartbeat. I’d jail and or fire the corrupt and careless in power. I’d ensure all countries had citizen run republics and were held accountable to this planets recovery and human rights, not governments, as if they get to be something else besides countrymen. I’d invest large amounts of money into science, research and development, particularly for the health of humanity and the Earth. I’d get that money by de-funding much of the military’s absurd budget and making sure the wealthy don’t avoid paying their share. Aside from politicians, I’d hold corrupt businesses accountable. Too big to fail would quickly become too big to exist.

We can’t allow greedy, conceited people to determine this future. They determined the past and created the present. It’s time that considerate, logical people take over, and not as one savior in the form of a president or CEO, but as a unit, working together and with all people to solve our problems. There is no doubt that the planet Earth will find it’s balance. The only questions are: Will humanity? And if so, how much damage will be done beforehand?
